The Beauty of Longevity
L’Oréal Rue Royale, June 2025
Curation and production with Fisheye Immersive for L’Oréal, Valentin Ducros and Maud Jezequel
The motif of longevity and aging is complex and multifaceted. It begs to be addressed by a variety of experts from multiple fields : health, science, sociology, culture… All facets of civilization are concerned. As for art, it has always been the role of artists to preempt unexplored territories, to show the hereto unseen angle… Synergies between the biological and technological sphere, unbridled and unashamed joy, symbiotic relationships with the living, reflections on human nature… The artworks curated for The Beauty of Longevity event generously challenge our preconceived notions on beauty, aging, and the current need for new models.
The exhibition is the result of several months of collaboration : discussions on the relationship between beauty and the arts, on approaching the theme from a scientific, design-oriented, narrative, aesthetic, or personal point of view, or on how to deploy physical artworks in the rich architecture of Le Visionnaire. It is particularly important for L’Oréal to nurture a dialogue with the artists, to invite them into a world of scientific and technological research, while respecting their vision.
The result is the presentation of existing artworks with bold, innovative scenography and entirely new projects, conceptualized for the event. In the groundbreaking video Each Branch of Coral Holds Up the Light of the Moon (2024), by Korean American artist Anicka Yi, a multitude of organisms take shape, meet each other and dance in an everlasting symbiotic movement; created by an algorithm fed on the artist’s entire corpus for the past ten years. The installation, created with holographic displays, plays on the concept of a double skin, through which we are invited to perceive the world differently. Singapore based AI artist Niceaunties , with the classic humour that characterizes her work, invites us into her world of “aunties” with a series of photos and videos. Built entirely around these often forgotten matriarchs, this world serves their needs, their wants, their agency… proving there are alternatives to the dominant discourse, these aunties are a bold and defiant way to cultivate happiness, in spite of society’s constant silencing. The collaboration between L’Oréal and Nicaunties is giving birth to a completely new work : a hyperrealistic sculpture, realised by Italian sculptor Valter Adam Casotto. Presented at the entrance of the building, this sculpture is an invitation to life long beauty from a new angle. Finally, London-based architecture and design innovation firm ecoLogicStudio presents a new 3D printed sculpture, integrated in the building, like a mirror into its biology. This sculpture, created using bio-inspired algorithms, is a poetic representation of skin, of a living entity beyond the traditional interpretations of the aging body.
